Mrs. Mary Elam was voted the 2018-19 Teacher of the Year for Daniel McKee Alternative School. Mrs. Elam has been with Rutherford County for 8 years, first as a Middle School teacher before finding her home at Daniel McKee Alternative School 5 years ago. "This is where I am suppose to be," states Mrs. Elam with her typical smile.
Mrs. Elam obtained her bachelor's degree in Political Science from Middle Tennessee State University, but returned a few years later to finish her post-baccalaureate program and obtain her license as an educator. She is married and mother to 5 wonderful children ranging in age from Senior in High School to 3 years old.
One of the things that gives her a great sense of accomplishment is seeing her students out in the community or back at their home schools being successful. Her heart is truly with at-risk teens. In her Letter to My Students, Mrs. Elam writes, " Often students come to our school at crossroads in their life. I work here because I want to be one of the people, along with my fellow teachers, standing at that crossroads helping you find your way".
Congratulations and Thank You to Mrs. Mary Elam!
